Kamala Harris Will Not Run for California Governor in 2026

Los Angeles — July 30, 2025 — Former Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris announced today that she will not run for Governor of California in 2026, ending months of speculation about her potential candidacy.

Harris, a Bay Area native and former state attorney general and U.S. senator, stated:

“I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.”

She emphasized that her leadership and public service will not be in elected office for now, though she pledged to remain active in politics by supporting Democratic candidates nationwide and listening to the American public.

This decision opens the door for a possible 2028 presidential bid. While Harris stopped short of confirming such plans, many analysts suggest her choice not to pursue the governorship is intended to keep that option alive.

Her withdrawal significantly reshapes the race to succeed term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom. Leading declared Democratic candidates now include:

  • Xavier Becerra, former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary
  • Eleni Kounalakis, current Lieutenant Governor
  • Katie Porter, former U.S. Representative
  • Antonio Villaraigosa, former Los Angeles Mayor
  • Betty Yee, former California State Controller
